I grew up reading the Hardy Boys’ books, and am an avid reader today of English mysteries i.e. P.D. James, Agatha Christie etc. About eight years ago, while my sister was gravely ill, there was a small collection of 1940’s vintage Nancy Drew books at the house where she was living with a friend, and I read one (”The Mystery of the Tolling Bell”)for much-needed escapism. I immediately became hooked, eventually reading over fifty titles, making sure to read the original editions. Recently, having forgotten most of the details of the various books, I picked up one of my favorites, The original 1930’s edition of “The Secret of the Ivory Charm,” and am hooked again! They are pure escapist, exciting fun. I certainly have favorites, such as the original editions of “The Hidden Staircase,” (many excellent reviews here), “The Secret of The Old Clock,”The Whispering Statue,” etc. etc. but I wouldn’t call ANY Nancy Drew boring. Every one is an entertaining page-turner. LOVE all of the secret panels, hidden doors, ghosts, mysterious messages, creepy mansions, sinister eavesdroppers etc.
As many have pointed out here, the original editions of the earlier books are far more detailed and have greater depth. The newer (written in the 1960’s and 1970’s) are more simplistic and fast-moving, but they too are hugely entertaining.
Of the later books, I particularly like the great “The Phantom of Pine Hill,” “The Crooked Banister,” The wonderful “Mystery of the Glowing Eye,” “the Clue of the Dancing Puppet,” and “The Moonstone Castle Mystery.”
It is a great pleasure to know that so many young people continue to enjoy these wonderful books.

Thomas the Tank Engine’s Hidden Surprises (Let’s Go Lift-and-Peek) Review
This is a great book. I bought it for my daughter who liked Thomas and loved the flaps. Then my son came along and this was the first book he showed interest in. We were thrilled. He LOVES this book. He reads it to himself. It is nice and short (keeps their attention, not like some of the other longer Thomas books), lots of nice flaps to look at, and is sturdy for the young kids. Just what we needed! I wish there were more like it we could get.

Hunting for Hidden Gold (Hardy Boys, Book 5) Review
The story is about two kids that are detectives. They help their dad solve many mysteries.
The main characters are Frank, Joe and Big Al. Frank and Joe were on a mission to find hidden gold.
On the way to find the gold, they fall down a mountain and crash into freezing cold water. My favorite
adventure was when Frank and Joe tried to capture Big Al. My favorite character is Frank because he saved
Joe alot of times. I could relate to Frank and Joe helping their dad because I help my dad too. Most of the
activities that they do are too dangerous for me to do but one activity that I could do was camping. I felt
frightened when Frank and Joe encountered a pack of hungry wolves when it was dark. I like the book
because there were so many adventures. My favorite part of the book was when Frank and Joe fought Big Al.
I liked this part because it was so exciting. I liked everything in the book. The characters seemed very real and the
adventures were amazing. If I could change a part in the book it would be when Frank and Joe’s dad broke his
ribs. I would recommend this book to kids who like adventures and mysteries. ESV
