Thomas Goes Fishing (Thomas and Friends) (Step into Reading) Features

Thomas Goes Fishing (Thomas and Friends) (Step into Reading) Overview

Thomas often sees his young friends standing by the stream fishing.
It looks like so much fun that Thomas wants to go fishing too. One day, he runs out of steam and his driver fills his boiler from the stream. And soon, Thomas’ boiler is what the driver is fishing in!
In the early 1940s, a loving father crafted a small, blue, wooden engine for his son, Christopher. The stories that this father, the Reverend W Awdry, made up to accompany this wonderful toy were first published in 1945.

Thomas Goes Fishing (Thomas and Friends) (Step into Reading) Review

This is a simplified version of the “Thomas Goes Fishing” story and to tell the truth we sort of like this version best as it gets to the point without alot of mucking about and ridicule from the other engines.

The story begins with Thomas watching some children fishing by a bridge. He `peeps’ and they wave, and Thomas wistfully declares that he would like to fish too. His driver chuckles at the thought, but every day Thomas sees the children and his desire stays alive.

Nothing happens until the day, Thomas suddenly stops and complains that his boiler hurts. [There is a great picture of the driver peering into Thomas' empty boiler]. Because his boiler is low and there is no water service station available, the driver proceeds to fill Thomas’ boiler with water from the river. And everything seems fine until Thomas starts to giggle.

“Hee hee!” said Thomas.
My boiler feels funny.”

Well the driver looks into the boiler but this time it not only has water, but two fish swimming about! Thomas’ solution is to `peep’ and attract his friends, the children. His driver borrows a fishing rod and well… he and Thomas go fishing!

Five Stars. The artwork in this little book is wonderful. The drawings are imaginative and bright. And the simplified story is actually funnier to my two than the longer version. And at this price, a worthy addition to the home sheds’ library.

Everything Kids? Magical Science Experiments Book: Dazzle your friends and family by making magical things happen! (Everything Kids Series) Review

As a high school science teacher, I am always looking for more great ways to introduce science to my preschool aged children. I think the experiments in here are fun, getting the kids interested in what is happening and does a good job of explaining they why’s of the experiment and giving some quality follow up questions. The only reason I didn’t rate the book a 5 star is because I wish it has some better pictures and way to present the material, but the content is great.

Thomas & Friends: Calling All Engines (Pictureback(R)) Review

This is definitely one of the best of the Thomas books. It is by the original author and has a message about working together. The steamies and the diesels are fighting, and no work gets done, so Thomas calls a meeting and they all work together. Even Diesel 10 chips in. Enjoy reading it 10 million times. . .

Thomas & Friends: Calling All Engines (Pictureback(R)) Overview

Thomas and the Really Useful Engines are working hard getting the new airport ready for the grand opening. Then a terrible storm slows them down, and soon it is clear that all the engines are going to have to work together. The steamies and the diesels have never gotten along very well, but Lady appears in Thomas’ dream and tells him it will be all right. But can they count on help from the biggest diesel of them all–Diesel 10?

Some of My Best Friends Are Books: Guiding Gifted Readers (3rd Edition) Review

This is an excellent resource for helping gifted children deal with the special problems that accompany giftedness. One reviewer complained about the lack of academic books in the bibliography, but the author clearly states at the beginning that the main thrust of the work is to offer books that help gifted children with emotional issues surrounding their giftedness. Intellectual needs are a part of that, but the author did not try to provide a complete bibliography for this but chose to focus more on the emotional needs.

I found the book most helpful in the first chapter discussion about the unique qualities and needs of gifted children. Although I got the book to help my gifted 4yo, I read descriptions of issues I have struggled with my whole life. In this book, I found my own struggles articulated for the first time, and it was a very emotional experience for me.

My main problem with the book is that it is written a bit immaturely–ignoring the complexities of gifted children and of human nature in general. The author frequently oversimplifies a problem and its solution, and also states opinion or probability as fact. For example, she frequently says that a child had a particular problem, and had the parents responded in a particular way, the child’s problem would have been solved. Of course, human nature is much too complex to assume that all of our problems could have been resolved during our childhood by our parents. But the author’s insights are nevertheless helpful if you can get past the oversimplification.

This book is very helpful just for the bibliography. Another reviewer complained that books were listed under the grade levels of average students, but I don’t see how else they could be categorized, since every gifted child is at their own unique level. I am using the books that correspond to (1) my child’s age, (2) my child’s reading level, and (3) my child’s level of understanding (so these may be read-aloud books).

Some of My Best Friends Are Books: Guiding Gifted Readers (3rd Edition) Overview

Good books are often good friends. Because gifted readers often intensely identify with characters, good books can provide bridges to new insights and better communication of feelings, values, and decision making, while also fostering intellectual and creative development. Now in its third edition, Some of My Best Friends Are Books describes: Intellectual and emotional needs of children of high ability; Typical and advanced reading patterns for grades K-12; How parents and teachers can give reading guidance and discuss books with young readers; A well-indexed annotated bibliography of more than 300 books for readers of all ages, carefully selected to promote intellectual and emotional development; Books that deal with themes such as Achievement, Aloneness, Arrogance, Developing Imagination, Intensity, Introversion, Perfectionism, Relationships with Others, Sensitivity, and Resiliency; and An index with suggested titles for each theme and the page numbers for short summaries of these titles

Stand Up for Yourself and Your Friends: Dealing with Bullies and Bossiness and Finding a Better Way Review

I also bought this book for and read it with my 6-year old, and it was written in simple enough language for her to understand and appreciate. I found many of the definitions in the book useful, not just for her ‘mean girl issues’ (and we have many) but also for everyday. The book defines bullying as pretty much any behavior that’s intended to make you feel bad, tattling as talk that’s intended to make someone look bad, and telling as a solution or a way to get help. We use these definitions frequently as a way of encouraging kind behavior with her friends and sister. And because it’s from American Girl, to her the source is just so much more credible than her parents! I really recommend this for pretty much any girl, regardless of her circumstances, from age 5 to probably 12 or 13.

Stand Up for Yourself and Your Friends: Dealing with Bullies and Bossiness and Finding a Better Way Overview

This book helps girls learn how to spot bullying and stand up and speak out against it. Quizzes, quotes from real girls, and “what would you do?” scenarios give readers lots of ideas for dealing with bullies, including clever comebacks and ways to ask adults for help. Includes an anti-bullying pledge for girls to sign, plus tear-out tips to share with their parents.

Disney/Pixer Friends & Heroes (First Look and Find) Review

Anything that can keep my 2 year-old son’s interest for long periods of time and for several months is a winner in my book!

This book has pages for: Toy Story, Finding Nemo, Monster’s Inc, A Bug’s Life, Toy Story 2, The Incredibles and Cars. It is very high quality with a cushioned cardboard cover and nice thick board book pages, so it has been durable and stood up to my son’s “tough love.”

My son will sit and find all items in the whole book. Several months later he still brings it to us to do with him. He quickly learned the point and can identify all items, and still loves it. There are advanced activities that are great and we are just starting them.

I reccommend this book, you will love the big bright pages, super quality and your child will love this activity around characters and stories they already know. The price is absolutely on for the quality of these books.

The World of Dick and Jane and Friends (Treasury) Review

This is a terrific book for the beginning reader. My daughter is 5 years old in pre-K. She started reading _Dick and Jane and Friends_. She did so well, I wanted to reinforce it with another Dick and Jane book.

Like _Dick and Jane and Friends_, _The World of Dick and Jane and Friends_ is a collection of three different Dick and Jane readers. _The World of Dick and Jane and Friends_ starts off very simply but progresses more quickly than _Dick and Jane and Friends_. As a book that relies more on word recognition than phonics, that can a little difficult for a new reader. It would be best for a very beginning reader to start with the last reader in that book “The New We Look and See.” I think the editors should have placed that reader first in the book (like “We Look and See” was first in _Dick and Jane and Friends_).

The stories of “We Look and See” from _Dick and Jane and Friends_ and “The New We Look and See” in _The World of Dick and Jane and Friends_ are different but the reading difficulties are the same. The same is true of “We Come and Go” from _Dick and Jane and Friends_.

I highly recommend this book for beginning readers. If you have a very beginning reader, try _Dick and Jane and Friends_ simply because of the order of the readers within the book. Not like you can’t skip around _The World of Dick and Jane and Friends_, but my daughter liked to see herself complete the book, reading it beginning to end.

The World of Dick and Jane and Friends (Treasury) Overview

Our second Dick and Jane treasury is here! The World of Dick and Jane and Friends is a compilation of some of the best-loved Dick and Jane titles. The treasury includes stories parents and grandparents will remember from Guess Who, The New We Come and Go, and The New We Look and See. Share a classic treasury with a new generation of Dick and Jane readers, who will love the Dick and Jane stories as much as you did!

Fuzzy Bee and Friends (Cloth Books) Review

Everyone agrees how important it is to start reading to your baby as soon as possible, but the trick is finding books that can interest them at a very young age. I love our cloth books for that reason! Fuzzy Bee and Friends is one of our favorites. The colors, strong contrasts, and different textures are very exciting to our three month old and have been for the last month! He has just started turning pages, and likes to look at and touch the images almost as much as he likes to try and wedge the whole book in his mouth. The text is short, and the rymes aren’t obnoxious so reading it is still fun even after the 100th time.

Fuzzy Bee and Friends (Cloth Books) Overview

-Ideal for babies and toddlers.

-Textured fabrics and bright colors help to develop children’s sensory awareness.

-Rhyming text helps kids improve their listening skills.
