My daughter entered puberty at 9, and I bought this book for her at 10. We looked through it together, and the pictures and small sections (easy to read, short) prompted many questions from her. Because the book has short chapters and small, easily identified sections within chapters, a young girl — who may not have the attention span of an older girl — can skip around, just view the pictures and read shorter sections to get just enough information to satisfy. I had on hand a few different mini and maxi pads, which she then wanted to ‘try on,’ giving the information and pictures in the book a more realistic dimmension.

The Madeleine stories in French or English are great for teaching almost all grade levels!
You might think that middle school boys will punch out at Madeleine, but fortunately they can relate to the son of the Spanish Ambassador, who is just wild enough to dismay the girls and interest your boy students.
You can use Madeleine as a basis for activities in Creative Writing.
Have the kids write a story about a visit by Madeleine, Miss Clavel, and the girls to their home town.
Have the kids read Eloise of the Plaza for crosscultural comparision, and write Madeleine Meets Eloise. Since Eloise is such a total American brat, and Madeleine such a self-disciplined Jehan la Pucelle of France, the potential for mutual learning is awesome.
I teach in an international school in Hong Kong and the kids are sophisticated enough to understand Madeleine at an early age; many have traveled to Paris.
But if you teach in the USA, be assured that not even the most raving right-wing teacher-hater Trogdolyte will be able to find anything objectionable in Madeleine. Elle est Catholique, mais oui, but I think Miss Clavel is a member of Opus Dei’s female auxiliary.
I do think Miss Clavel, who’s not a real Nun, needs a day off in Montmartre and would be delighted to arrange it.
Bemelman’s politics are (French) Republican and mainstream, only somewhat anti-*ancien regime* as in the scene where Madeleine asserts the values of Madame la Republique as against racial discrimination against dogs.

This is an excellent series which I’ve used for all my homeschooling children. No matter what their ability was at the time, by the end of each book they were able to use words effectively and decode the meaning of other words they hadn’t learned through knowing what other similar words meant.
One note of caution: Book 4 is NOT necessarily for fourth graders. The EPS website lists this as a 7th grade book. Most of the sellers on Amazon have listed the numbered books as if this was the recommended grade level for each. Check the original website and look at the sample pages before ordering.

The Marine biology Coloring Book is a coloring textbook. It is a complete course on Marine biology that you can color in. Coloring provides a multisensory approach to learning which can enhance memorization. Coloring is fun and allows you to be creative, while helping you learn about a new topic. As a teacher who has used this book in my classroom, I would highly recommend it. Topics include marine ecology, rocky coastlines, coral reefs, biology, coloration, defense mechanisms, reproduction and taxonomy of fish, and various phyla of invertebrates. There are some that believe these books are too hard for young children. This is nonsense. Coloring books provide a pressure free way to learn. Who says a 5 year old cannot learn the names or body parts of a fish. On the other hand, there is a ton of information in here that is appropriate for all ages including college students. One need only use the information that is of interest to them and then enjoy coloring in the pictures! Besides the Marine Biology Coloring Book, I also recommend Anatomy Coloring Book, The (3rd Edition), The Botany Coloring Book and The Complete Hawaiian Reef Fish Coloring Book.

Some of My Best Friends Are Books: Guiding Gifted Readers (3rd Edition) Review
This is an excellent resource for helping gifted children deal with the special problems that accompany giftedness. One reviewer complained about the lack of academic books in the bibliography, but the author clearly states at the beginning that the main thrust of the work is to offer books that help gifted children with emotional issues surrounding their giftedness. Intellectual needs are a part of that, but the author did not try to provide a complete bibliography for this but chose to focus more on the emotional needs.
I found the book most helpful in the first chapter discussion about the unique qualities and needs of gifted children. Although I got the book to help my gifted 4yo, I read descriptions of issues I have struggled with my whole life. In this book, I found my own struggles articulated for the first time, and it was a very emotional experience for me.
My main problem with the book is that it is written a bit immaturely–ignoring the complexities of gifted children and of human nature in general. The author frequently oversimplifies a problem and its solution, and also states opinion or probability as fact. For example, she frequently says that a child had a particular problem, and had the parents responded in a particular way, the child’s problem would have been solved. Of course, human nature is much too complex to assume that all of our problems could have been resolved during our childhood by our parents. But the author’s insights are nevertheless helpful if you can get past the oversimplification.
This book is very helpful just for the bibliography. Another reviewer complained that books were listed under the grade levels of average students, but I don’t see how else they could be categorized, since every gifted child is at their own unique level. I am using the books that correspond to (1) my child’s age, (2) my child’s reading level, and (3) my child’s level of understanding (so these may be read-aloud books).

The thing that I really like about this book was that all the sentences weren’t the same. It did not just say “these are bananas, these are tomatoes” all the time, but integrated questions, and even characteristics of the fruits and vegetables. The pictures are bright and colorful, and made me want to go buy a piece of fruit right then. I would highly recommend this book as a useful and practical tool for learning the names of basic fruits and vegetables in both English and Spanish. It is very likely that you will find yourself practicing these words at home when you are eating a piece of watermelon, or chopping a pepper for dinner.

Curious George Plants a Seed Spanish/English Bilingual Edition Review
As a Spanish teacher, I’m always looking for motivating ways to introduce or review concepts in my classes. I teach students ages 3 to adult, so I have an extensive library of bilingual books as well as Spanish only books.
Jorge el curiosos is a great series. I have yet to find a mistake in translation, and the vocabulary is simple enough for my youngest students, and yet my oldest ones still are challenged as they practice the grammar tense changes between the imperfect and preterite tense.
Wonderful addition to Spanish classes or your family library for Spanish “stuff!”

This book offers indepth information about a variety of topics concerning childrens literature. In the first chapters it focuses on the development of children and their perceptions of literature at different ages. It then informs the reader about the historical development of children’s literature. The biggest part of the book, however, is about the different genres of literature available. What I liked about this book was that it offered many examples and reading samples. It also included several essays from children book authors who wrote about their profession. The teaching aids and the recommended reading at the end of each chapter proved helpful. However, some areas of this book, such as this one, are only helpful to people interested in child education as a profession.
