Big Blue Book of Beginner Books (Beginner Books(R)) Overview

For over 54 years; Dr. Seuss has paid untold millions of house calls to welcoming children and their grateful parents. Now your favorite stories are available in this specially priced collector’s edition. This collection of Beginner Books contains: Are You My Mother? by P. D. Eastman; The Best Nest by P. D. Eastman; A Fly Went By by Mike McClintock; illus. by Fritz Siebel; Go; Dog; Go! by P. D. Eastman; It’s Not Easy Being a Bunny by Marilyn Sadler; illus. by Roger Bollen and Put Me in the Zoo by Robert Lopshire.

Big Blue Book of Beginner Books (Beginner Books(R)) Review

My daughter is 5 years old and in kindergarten. She loves this book. The words are simple and easy to read and the repetition and rhyme help keep her attention. Having the stories in a collection makes her feel like she’s reading a big kid’s book, like her 8 year old brother. Together as a family, we have enjoyed reading this book numerous times.

The stories include the following:
* “It’s Not Easy Being a Bunny
* “Go, Dog, Go!”
* “Are You My Mother?”
* “The Best Nest”
* “Put Me in the Zoo”
* “A Fly Went By”

I’d recommend this as a beginning reader book for kindergarten and first grade. Older kids may think they are beyond Dr. Seuss, but my son still enjoyed them last year in second grade and even now, when we read together.

Younger children will appreciate the rhythm and rhymes, the colorful pictures and the silliness.

I do not mind reading and re-reading the stories over and over and over. There is a hypnotic appeal to them that works on adults, too.

The Berenstain Bears No Girls Allowed (First Time Books(R)) Overview

Sister Bear can run faster, climb higher, and hit a ball farther than the boys, and she gloats over it. So Brother Bear and his friends build a clubhouse for boys only, and Sister is hopping mad! She plans a honey of a revenge in this funny and thoughtful book. IRA Children’s Choice.

The Berenstain Bears No Girls Allowed (First Time Books(R)) Review

Do the boy cubs not want Sister Bear around simply because she is a girl or is it that she is boastful about being better than the (older) cubs? Should Papa Bear force the boys to let Sister Bear in their club or is there a better way to handle this situation? These are just some of the issues covered in this good book.

“The Berenstain Bears No Girls Allowed” is not just about boys versus girls. It highlights that it is important to be a good winner and promotes resolving issues in a win-win manner (rather than ripping your adversary limb from limb).

My son enjoyed this book. After reading it he said he was going to start a club for his boy friends and his girl friends. His sign would say “No Bullies Allowed”.

Ten Apples Up On Top! (Beginner Books(R)) Review

My daughter asks me to read this story to her every night. It’s one of her favorite books, and she knows a good portion of it by heart. The copy we’ve used is the original print, which was from my own childhood. I decided it was time we upgraded, and although I’m rather impartial to change, I was disappointed that they changed the original colors. It detracts from the original story, and I thought the simplicity of the original illustrations went well with the tale by Dr. Seuss. It was a great book in 1961 and continues to be a great book. You shouldn’t change what has been working marvelously.

Ten Apples Up On Top! (Beginner Books(R)) Overview

Illus. in color. A beginning Beginner Book, this ingenious story uses a vocabulary of only 75 different words. “A hilarious story in rhyme about a number of animals who could carry 10 apples on their heads.”–Elementary English.

Ten Apples Up On Top! (Beginner Books(R)) Specifications

Since 1961, Ten Apples up on Top has been helping preschoolers learn to count and read simultaneously. Simple illustrations and even simpler rhymes make this apple-balancing competition between a dog, a tiger, and a lion a fun, easy place to practice sight words and phonics. Siblings can even take turns reading phrases like “Seven apples up on top. I am so good they will not drop.” The inevitable tumbling crash is a great climax for busy toddlers to enjoy, and parents will appreciate the cooperative lesson the last page offers. (Preschool to early reader) –Jill Lightner

The Berenstain Bears and the Blame Game (First Time Books(R)) Review

The Berenstain Bears were highly recommended by my friend. Unfortunately I couldn’t find them on the bookstore shelfs in my locality. So I opted for buying them at Amazon online. In a nutshell, these books teach simple life lessons in a way a young child can relate to and understand. For example, where the bears forget their manners, Mama Bear gives them chores to do around the house, to help them remember their manners the next time. And when the little bears tell a lie, its the sad look on Mama’s face that make them decide to tell the truth

The Berenstain Bears and the Blame Game (First Time Books(R)) Overview

Who’s to blame? That’s what everyone always wants to know. But the

kernal of wisdom at the heart of this latest First Time Book is who

really cares? Because — let’s face it — there’s always enough blame to

go around. What matters is how we work together to fix the problem.

Great Day for Up! (Bright & Early Books(R)) Review

Dr. Suess’s scansion and made-up words annoy me. My tri-lingual children have a hard enough time differentiating and isolating Standard English words, so I generally avoid Suess.
The volume is a rare welcome exception (there are a few Suessisms) and is an excellent book for first readers.

The story is plain, with the major intention of teaching your child to *read* his or her first words in English (in this case the word is “up”).

But Quentin Blake’s illustrations are superb and worth the price of the volume alone.

The conclusion is a bit silly, and has a rather lazy aspect to it that parents need to guide their children on (no, it isn’t okay to sleep in bed all day like the boy in the story, this is just a silly book”), but mostly this is unobjectionable.

Great Day for Up! (Bright & Early Books(R)) Overview

Illus. in full color. The meanings of “up” are conveyed with merry verse and illustrations in a happy book that celebrates the joy of life.

Oh, the Thinks You Can Think! (Beginner Books(R)) Review

Oh, the Thinks You Can Think! Is a charming book by the immortal Dr. Seuss who wrote many fine children’s books in his time. Oh, the Thinks You Can Think! is no exception. This book encourages children to imagine and eventually explore the world without fear.

The book has excellent illustrations that amuse children–and adults; and the rhyming text always impresses me.

The book starts by encouraging children to use their imaginations to think up what other animals and/or places in the world may be like. This alone can stimulate a lot of conversation between you and your child about other places in the real world and what life is like there. This will go a long way toward teaching younger children about the world out there that one day they will be exploring for real. In addition, the book also has Dr. Seuss using his own imagination to give examples to children as to how to use their imaginations; we get words about foreign things and sounds like “guff” and “schlopp.” This does a marvelous job of teaching children to always be optimistic.

The book has even more value. Younger children will profit from learning words critical to their growing vocabularies including yellow, blue, red, pink, black, white, night, day, left and right–and more! Excellent.

The book cover withstands some throwing around just in case your child accidentally mistreats it; and, as always, the paper quality of these books by Dr. Seuss is very good.

I highly recommend this fine children’s book. It teaches much to both very young children and older children as well. Get this and enjoy it with your growing child!
