Waddle!: A Scanimation Picture Book (Scanimation Picture Books) Overview

It’s Waddle! And it’s in color. And boy, is it irresistible. In the same way that kids can’t read Gallop! without wanting to gallop around the room, Waddle!, an animals-in-motion Scanimation book, will inspire prancing, hopping, stomping, and scampering. And did we mention color? Created by the optical genius behind the phenomenal #1 and #2 New York Times bestselling children’s books, Gallop! and Swing!, Waddle! adds touches of color to the images and integrates it into the text. That prancing pig is pink, the leaping dolphin is blue, the slithering snake yellow. The Scanimation itself is also more lifelike, as the author continues to refine his patented Scanimation process, resulting in a more fluid, realistic motion. Nothing else compares.

Waddle! teaches color and movement. Its language is a joy, the rhymes inspiring, the animals full of life. And one more thing: Waddle! has a surprise ending. Something else to grab the reader—literally.

Waddle!: A Scanimation Picture Book (Scanimation Picture Books) Review

Waddle, illustrated by Rufus Butler Seder, is just about the cutest book I’ve seen in a long time. I brought it home for Rory, 18 months old, and she immediately feel in love. She couldn’t wait to turn each page and act out the movements of all the animals.

“Can you STOMP like an elephant?”

Yes she can!

This is a new favorite and stays close by for when Rory is visiting.

I’m off to get the complete set for our church’s toddler room.Waddle!: A Scanimation Picture Book (Scanimation Picture Books)

Each maze has black and white drawings of jungle animals involved in the maze. Each has a one line objective that a child of 4 to 5 would enjoy. I disagree with the age range of 4-8, these mazes are not suitable for children over five.

Beach Sticker Activity Book (Dover Little Activity Books) Review

I got this to take on a plane ride to occupy my 15 month old. It worked great! She could put the stickers and, then take them off and put them on again. She’s little and ripped a few stickers but for this price and the small size, I can’t think of a better thing to put in a diaper bag for a plane ride.

The most trusted nonfiction series on the market, Eyewitness Books provide an in-depth, comprehensive look at their subjects with a unique integration of words and pictures.

DK’s classic look at Ancient Rome, now reissued with a CD and wall chart.

Ancient Rome (DK Eyewitness Books) Review

DK’s Ancient Rome book is definitely captivating. It’s worth the read even if you don’t love history. I didn’t until I really began to relearn history. I never had a true full history class; so I’m digging up random books on it. DK has a variety of bite sized ‘text’ on hundreds of topics. You’ll love the illustrations, interesting artifacts of Ancient Rome, really see what people wore, did, ate, and acted. It is condesed well written, and worth the buy for your adult shelf or child’s shelf. Decent read.

When I Feel Sad (The Way I Feel Books) Overview

Readers will recognize similiar experiences in their own lives as this little guinea pig describes feeling sad when someone is cross or when something bad happens. Eventually our heroine realizes that feeling sad doesn’t last forever.

When I Feel Sad (The Way I Feel Books) Review

Therapist Cornelia Maude Spelman has written a wonderful series of books for children, teaching them how to cope with various emotions. In “When I Feel Sad”, the focus is on coping with sadness, as experienced by a young guinea pig. Written as a story, the young guinea pig goes through various situations that make her feel sad.Later, the young guinea pig, with the guidance of an adult, learns that it is ok to feel sad occasionally, and that happiness eventually returns.Of course, this may appear rather simplistic and does not take into consideration that there are children out there who suffer from chronic depression, but this should be considered more of a general book on the topic of how to cope with being sad. There is a brief note to parents by the author at the beginning of the book that explains how it is important to help children cope with sadness, by acknowledging their emotions and offering comfort, but not to the point of overindulgence, which the author cautions against. The illustrations are vibrant and colorful and help make the story real for children.Highly recommended series of books for toddlers and up!

RandMcNally Kids’ Road Atlas (Backseat Books) Overview

Rand McNally’s Backseat Books® series is your source for fighting those boredom blues. Kids’ Road Atlas features real road maps, great travel games, state-by-state puzzles, state facts (including the nickname, capital, flower, tree, and bird), an index, and much, much more. An answer key is also included in the back of the book. These colorful, fun-filled books are perfect for keeping the kids busy at home or during those long stretches. Backseat Books®. Boredom cured.

80 pages; 8.5″ x 10.75″.

RandMcNally Kids’ Road Atlas (Backseat Books) Review

I’ve purchased all three of the books in this series, one for each of our children for our upcoming trip. Of the three (Kid’s Road Atlas, Are We There Yet, and the Best Travel Activity Book Ever), this one is the most “educational”

Highlights:

*Good overview of the 50 states with basic highlights for each state (state bird, flower, tree, capital, nickname and a color map)

*There is a puzzle/game on each state page. All of them are connected to the state thematically or factually. The games vary in degree of difficulty and amount of writing required. I’d say our nine-year old could do all of them…our seven year old would be able to do some but not all. Some are quick (2 minutes or less), others are rather involved (15-30 minutes)

*To respond to another reviewer’s comment, I did not find the state maps to be overly simplistic. For North Carolina, it lists about 50 towns/cities, all the interstates and some of the state roads, some of the bigger lakes, parks, etc. Especially if you are traveling across several states, this map is enough that they could kind of follow the route, noting towns along the way without being overwhelmed.

*It includes a few pages of map skills at the beginning, and an answer and index at end. It covers all fifty states, and one page for Canada and Mexico.

*It has extended use even after activities are completed as a simple atlas–the pencil games don’t mark up the maps–all pages are color.

*Not as glitzy as some, but it should keep my child entertained for awhile while providing some educational value. Plus the price is reasonable.

The Story about Ping (Reading Railroad Books) Overview

Since 1933, The Story About Ping has captivated generations of readers, but never before has it been available in a mass-market paperback format. No one can deny the appeal of the book’s hero, Ping, the spirited little duck who lives on a boat on the Yangtze River. Ping’s misadventures one night while exploring the world around his home form the basis of this timeless classic, which is brought to life by Kurt Wiese’s warm and poignant illustrations.

The Story about Ping (Reading Railroad Books) Review

THE STORY ABOUT PING by Marjorie Flack and Kurt Wiese is a 32-page book, with an illustration on every page. The illustations have black ink outlines of the characters and objects, which are filled in with colored pastel chalk. The texture of the drawing paper can be seen, by way of the near-microscopic dots. The textures of the chalk marks, the streaks and dots, are a treat to the eye. The book is a classic, having been first published in 1933.

The first picture shows a line of ducks walking off a wooden boat, across a board, to a meadow. Ping is in the middle of the line. The next picture shows the same ducks climbing back into the boat at sunset. The next picture shows Ping’s choice not to return the boat, because he was a little late in returning and was afraid of getting a spank from the master of the boat. The last duck on board always got a spank.

The next 20 or so pictures show the consequences of Ping’s decision to stay away. Being alone at night. Being lost on the river amidst a group of unfamiliar wooden boats, and not knowing which boat was his. Being captured by a boy. Being imprisoned in a basket on a boat. Being released from the basket by the boy. Spotting his familiar family of ducks from a distance, and swimming back to his boat. Getting a spank.

The narrative begins like this: “Once upon a time there was a beautifil young duck named Ping. Ping lived with his mother and his father and two sisters and three brothers and eleven aunts and seven uncles and forty-two cousins. Their home was a boat with two wise eyes on the Yangtze River.”

These opening words remind me of the opening words of another classic, where most of the story takes place on the water: “Call me Ishmael. Some years ago – never mind how long precisely – having little or no money in my purse, and nothing particular to interest me on shore, I thought I would sail about a little and see the watery part of the world. It is a way I have of driving off the spleen, and regulating the circulation.”

Both books are classics. But THE STORY OF PING is a classic suitable especially for little kids.

My list of “must own” children’s books include: THE STORY ABOUT PING by Marjorie Flack, THE LITTLE HOUSE by Virginia Lee Burton, CAPS FOR SALE by Esphyr Slobodkina, the books illustrated by Tibor Gergley, and of course RICHARD SCARRY’S BEST STORYBOOK EVER! by Richard Scarry. Oh, to be the parent of a 2-year old once again!!!

Amazing Mazes (Kumon’s Practice Books) Overview

This book builds on foundational pencil-control skills by tracing lines through increasingly challenging mazes. The exercises have many three-dimensional illustrations, such as towns, streets, and parks, which engage children’s curiosity. This amusing practice will also help children acquire the ability to concentrate, a crucial study skill for the emerging student.

Amazing Mazes (Kumon’s Practice Books) Review

This is a really fun book for preschoolers that helps develop pre-writing skills in an easy, relaxed way. We had found books for my son that had one or two mazes in them and he discovered that he loves them. This book was then the perfect thing: it’s mazes from cover to cover, starting easy and getting a bit harder toward the back. He is learning to stay within the lines and those tough angles are helping him practice writing smooth curves, without frustration. Highly recommended and lots of fun.

I Wear My Tutu Everywhere! (Reading Railroad Books) Overview

When Tilly wants to wear her tutu all the time and rips it on the playground, Mama suprises her with the best place to wear it–dancing class.

I Wear My Tutu Everywhere! (Reading Railroad Books) Review

We first purchased this book a few years ago when our oldest daughter was about 3 1/2 years old and she would wear a tutu EVERY day to school, shopping, etc. She often looked “silly” (just like Tilly in the book) but she was happy and she loved the idea of being a ballerina. This book perfectly captured the intensity of her desire to dress how she wanted. It really was a precious time in her childhood. We even framed an illustration out of the book and have it up on her bedroom wall because it so wonderfully captured who she was during those pre-school years. I wear my Tutu Everywhere is a great book for all those pre-school wanna-be ballerinas. We read it many times over and highly recommend it!
