Junior Chapter Book: Team Rocket Truce (Pokemon) Review

My son is eight years old and often doesn’t have the patience to read. Of course I want him to read so finding books that are interesting to him can be a challenge. My son loves Pokemon so I figured I would give this book a try.

Well, the book came in and I gave it to my son, very excited about my surprise for him. He was appreciative but it turns out, as he told me, Team Rocket was his least favorite team.

Later in the day he picked the book up again and proceeded to read the whole book straight through. It is not a big book, but he loved it and spent time reading, which was my goal. When I later asked about the book, he said it was one of his favorites, along with the Captain Underpants books. I hope your child loves it too!

The Complete Resource Book for Toddlers and Twos: Over 2000 Experiences and Ideas Review

This book is big for a reason! It presents fun and interesting activities on a myriad of simple subjects (individual body parts, individual colours, Holidays) that little ones would like to learn more about. Each of these subjects has a “chapter” devoted to it. For instance, the chapter on “Loud” suggests songs, stories, activities (physical and craft projects) that are related to the action “Loud” exclusively. Within these chapters, the activities I stated above are broken down by language enrichment, cognitive development, social-emotional development, and physical development. Overall, it aims to be a “well rounded” educational guide. This book is meant to work best in a daycare/preschool/structured homeschool setting because it allows you to set up a structured “school plan,” but it could be a handy reference to a parent if their child takes a particular interest in a certain subject. I really like the way this book is presented. It’s very easy to follow, and has so many great, simple ideas. I would recommend you check it out at the library before you consider buying if you are a parent just looking for fun ideas for your own kids (this could be really great for you if you don’t mind planning ahead, ala a school setting) but I would recommend daycares/pre-schools to buy this book because it seems really fun and easy to use! This book also says it’s meant for toddlers and twos, but I think these activities would be fun for small children from toddlers through five. I mean, what little child doesn’t love to sing songs and play games? It’s new material for the little ones, but a fun review for the bigger kids.

The Complete Resource Book for Toddlers and Twos: Over 2000 Experiences and Ideas Overview

Target the fertile areas of development for toddlers and twos with these easy-to-implement activities. Each of the 100 daily topics is divided into activities and experiences that support language enrichment, cognitive development, social-emotional development and physical development.

Animal Hide-And-Seek (Touchy Feely Flap Book) Review

This book blew me away, the flaps are a stiff cardboard, there are many, many textural components and the pages are very thick. There are only 5 open pages (the illustrations cover 2 pages). Each one contains adorable illustrations of a dog, cow, hens, etc. It is super-cute and durable and I know it’s unlikely for this to be torn by my 17 mth old. I, as someone who has used packaging tape to secure flaps from being torn off, HIGHLY recommend this as a fun book truly designed for toddlers or younger!

Animal Hide-And-Seek (Touchy Feely Flap Book) Overview

In a large format with flaps as well as textured patches, this book introduces the characters from Apple Tree Farm to young children. The use of textures adds a different dimension to sharing books with babies and toddlers. As each page is turned, a different texture is waiting to be discovered.

Happy Easter, Little Critter (Look-Look) Review

Little Critter books have always been favorites in our house. My 13 year old loved them when he was very young and now my 2 1/2 year old loves them. Mercer Mayers illustration style just seems to draw kids in as he captures the emotions of children in his own silly way. As the title suggest this book has the Little Critter and his family celebrating Easter beginning with the kids finding the treats the Easter Bunny has left them.

From there it’s off to church service. Little Critter does NOT like getting dressed up. So much like some little boys that I know! After church there’s a big picnic where all of the kids dye their Easter Eggs and Little Critter thinks his are the best! The eggs are then hidden and all the kids go on an Easter egg hunt. Critter finds a lot but scowls when he misses one and someone else finds it. It’s all good fun!

Now back home the kids finish their easter by digging into the wonderful treats that the Easter Bunny left them. Kids really love this book because they see Little Critter enjoying all of the fun activities and treats that they will be enjoying on Easter Day. Perfectly captures the spirit of Easter. Always a big hit!

Happy Easter, Little Critter (Look-Look) Overview

Mercer Mayer’s popular Little Critter experiences all the joys of Easter, in spite of his little sister constantly tugging at his sleeve. The Critter family goes to church on Easter sunday. Afterward there is egg-dying and an egg hunt. Little Critter doesn’t like dressing up for ‘Easter but otherwise enjoys a very special family holiday.

Disney/Pixer Friends & Heroes (First Look and Find) Review

Anything that can keep my 2 year-old son’s interest for long periods of time and for several months is a winner in my book!

This book has pages for: Toy Story, Finding Nemo, Monster’s Inc, A Bug’s Life, Toy Story 2, The Incredibles and Cars. It is very high quality with a cushioned cardboard cover and nice thick board book pages, so it has been durable and stood up to my son’s “tough love.”

My son will sit and find all items in the whole book. Several months later he still brings it to us to do with him. He quickly learned the point and can identify all items, and still loves it. There are advanced activities that are great and we are just starting them.

I reccommend this book, you will love the big bright pages, super quality and your child will love this activity around characters and stories they already know. The price is absolutely on for the quality of these books.

Elements Of Pop Up: A Pop Up Book For Aspiring Paper Engineers Review

Wow!…was my first reaction when I opened this book. All the ‘guts’ of pop-up mechanisms, with notes on ratios and relative sizes. This is not a how-to book, or a children’s book, but a conceptual guide to the magic of pop-ups. Think of it as a dictionary of pop-up mechanisms.

The examples are mounted so that you can see both the presentation side and the hidden mechanisms. The samples are white, with occasional notations printed on the pop-up. No color printing to distract from the form unless it is part of the mechanism (e.g. the moir? pop-up). Included are your standard pop-up forms, various shapes and boxes, dials, pull-tabs and some fascinating sliders and spinners.

Elements Of Pop Up: A Pop Up Book For Aspiring Paper Engineers Overview

Here at last is the definitive book on how to make a pop-up. Every aspect of the creation of a pop-up, known as paper engineering, is clearly and thoroughly covered. All types of parallel folds, angle folds, wheels, and pull tabs are accurately detailed verbally and visually, flat and in dimension. Also included is a history of pop-ups and a step-by-step photographic essay on how a pop-up is made from start to finish. This guided tour is perfect for aspiring pop-up creators, paper engineers, students, and appreciators of this unique art form.

Elements Of Pop Up: A Pop Up Book For Aspiring Paper Engineers Specifications

Believe it or not, the first known pop-up element in a book appeared in an astrological manuscript in 1306. During the ensuing centuries, movable mechanics were used in more and more books–but only for adults. In the 1700s a British bookseller came up with the idea of illustrating well-known children’s stories with movable flaps of paper. The rest, as they say, is history. Now aspiring paper mechanics (creative engineer-artists who create dimensional and movable books, otherwise known as pop-ups) can learn the how-tos and wherefores of this marvelous craft. From tip-ons to dummies to glue knock-outs, all the intricacies of pop-up production are outlined and explained.

Readers are invited to take apart the sample pop-ups (as long as they promise to put them back together!) to determine exactly how each score folds and where each glue point is. Instructions are somewhat advanced, but the dimensional samples and the step-by-step photographic essay on how a pop-up is made will ease the journey. David Carter and James Diaz have each created many, many pop-up books, and are passionate about their trade. So blow the cobwebs out of the geometry corner of your brain, and get to work! The Witch Who Was Afraid of Witches (I Can Read Book 4) Review

I bought this book in a book store for my 5 years daughter. I just grabbed it last second without looking beyond the cover so she will not be upset that her 3.5 years old brother got something and she did not. She liked the cover and the name of the book. And I liked the price in addition to that.
We read the book as soon as we got home and what a hit it was with me and both my children. The first day I had to read it 3 times, for about a month after that I was reading it every night. Now we are in the second month and even while there is a `witch free’ night once in a while, I am still reading it almost every day to either son or daughter or both.
Another important point for me is that I enjoy reading the book too.

The Witch Who Was Afraid of Witches (I Can Read Book 4) Overview

Wendy is a little witch who is afraid of her mean, bossy witch sisters–until one special Halloween night when she makes a magical discovery and outwitches her older sisters. In this new edition, complete with full-color art, Alice Low has adapted her popular story specifically for beginning readers

Children’s Books in Children’s Hands: An Introduction to Their Literature (3rd Edition) Review

This book offers indepth information about a variety of topics concerning childrens literature. In the first chapters it focuses on the development of children and their perceptions of literature at different ages. It then informs the reader about the historical development of children’s literature. The biggest part of the book, however, is about the different genres of literature available. What I liked about this book was that it offered many examples and reading samples. It also included several essays from children book authors who wrote about their profession. The teaching aids and the recommended reading at the end of each chapter proved helpful. However, some areas of this book, such as this one, are only helpful to people interested in child education as a profession.

Children’s Books in Children’s Hands: An Introduction to Their Literature (3rd Edition) Overview

This highly lauded text, with a “reader-response” approach and extensive inclusion of culturally diverse literature, has been updated to include coverage of such important topics as technology in the classroom, visual literacy, and the influence of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2000 on reading instruction in the public schools. Framing the content within a perspective of cultural diversity, renowned authors Charlie Temple, Junko Yokota and Miriam Martinez take the reader inside the workings of children’s literature, focusing on ways in which literature elicits responses from young readers, genre by genre and book by book. The text provides a full range of thoughtful and practical suggestions for sharing and exploring literature with children. Thus, there is a natural connection between the presentation and exploration of good books for children (including more than 2,000 annotations) and the rich repertoire of reader-response-based techniques. This connection prepares the reader not only to choose good literary works for children, but to understand their dynamics and be able to engage young readers.

I Can Draw People (Usborne Playtime) Review

My almost 6 year old daughter enjoys this book. It’s fairly basic, and not a large book (about 30 pages). It has the following people that can be drawn:

workman, angel, giant, pirate, queen/king, ballerina, soccer player, scuba diver, astronaut, parachutist, skier, ice skater, cowboy, horse and rider, and a page for making faces with different emotions (sad, angry, etc.)

I Can Draw People (Usborne Playtime) Overview

There are step-by-step picture instructions in this book showing exactly what to draw with lots of ideas for adding details and backgrounds. A wide range of examples are given from soccer players and ballerinas to kings, queens and workmen.

Sisters Forever: Barbie in the 12 Dancing Princesses (Deluxe Coloring Book) Review

I bought this for my boyfriend’s 5and a half year old daughter, who HAS to have everything 12 Princesses (and loves coloring). We couldn’t pull her away from this coloring book for 3 days. Our fridge is covered (even more so than normal) with pictures. She was even ripping out colored pages and slipping them under our bedroom door for us at 6am.

I think she appreciated this coloring book more than the movie, or the dolls – which until this point were her favorite. I plan on buying another one, because this one is pretty much used up and she won’t know what to do with herself after that.

Sisters Forever: Barbie in the 12 Dancing Princesses (Deluxe Coloring Book) Overview

Barbie(R) and her eleven sisters escape the rules of their harsh aunt for a magical world of dance in this retelling of the classic fairytale about the twelve dancing princesses. Every night the princesses descend into a magical realm where they dance the night away. In the morning, their shoes are worn through, but no one knows where they’ve been or what they’ve been up to! This mysterious and exciting fairytale will capture the imaginations of little girls everywhere.
