Books Children Love: A Guide to the Best Children’s Literature Overview

A love for reading is one of the most precious gifts that we can give children. It nurtures their imagination and creativity, lets them explore other worlds, and opens their minds to new truths and knowledge in appealing, inspiring ways. But how can we sort through thousands of children’s books to discover the really worthwhile ones?

Elizabeth Wilson offers us a newly revised, comprehensive guide to the very best in children’s literature. Just as in the original volume, she comments on the tone and content of excellently written, captivating books in over two dozen subject areas. Hundreds of new titles have been added while retaining timeless classics and modern favorites-all of which respect traditional values. So that no matter what the children’s ages are or whether they love fact or fiction, you can trust these books to share things that you can believe in and kids will delight in.

Books Children Love: A Guide to the Best Children’s Literature Review

Every parent should BEGIN their children’s library experience with this book! There are hundreds of thousands of titles for children’s books, and our children will only be able to read a limited number of these throughout their childhood years. So, don’t waste time on the losers in the bunch!

It is BEST to start with a PLAN for raising children, and add a tool, such as this book, which can assist us in guiding our children’s book choices!

Every home library should have this book from which to START the process of enriching children through literature. There is certainly plenty of twaddle to read out there which is of little or no value to our children… so why waste their time allowing them to wade through this twaddle and read it? This is often what kills a child’s desire to read.

Many books today are poorly written with confusing characters and lacking a protagonist. Many times there are no character building moral values imparted!

This little handbook is great for helping us (parents and teachers) ensure that the best of children’s literature is not left behind when our children are beginning their reading experiences.

This book will inform you about children’s books which you never knew existed. Most books assigned for our children to read are actually chosen by people who know next to nothing about the options in children’s literature.

I am reminded of the little book store owner in “You’ve Got Mail.” Kathleen “Shopgirl” Kelly (played by Meg Ryan) knows all of the wonderful, imaginative, classic children’s books for children to read; while Joe “NY152″ Fox (played by Tom Hanks just wants to build a conglomerate book store down the street and sell whatever his buyers stock in it. His staff knows no more about the books on the shelves than the shoppers!

Shopgirl knew all the best children’s literature and was able to guide her customers through the process of choosing rich reading… those titles that every child should read at least once (because of the quality of writing and storytelling), but will usually read another twenty times because of the richness of the story and the overall experience with which the child is left!

Choose books which have characters to aspire to, stories to imitate, life lessons to be learned, all while fertilizing the seeds of each child’s natural imagination!

If You’re Reading This, It’s Too Late (Secret Series) Overview

Beware!

Dangerous secrets lie between the pages of this book.

OK, I warned you. But if you think I’ll give anything away, or tell you that this is the sequel to my first literary endeavor, The Name of This Book is Secret, you’re wrong.

I’m not going to remind you of how we last left our heroes, Cass and Max-Ernest, as they awaited intiation into the mysterious Terces Society, or the ongoing fight against the evil Dr. L and Ms. Mauvais. I certainly won’t be telling you about how the kids stumble upon the Museum of Magic, where they finally meet the amazing Pietro!

Oh, blast! I’ve done it again. Well, at least I didn’t tell you about the missing Sound Prism, the nefarious Lord Pharaoh, or the mysterious creature born in a bottle over 500 years ago, the key to the biggest secret of all.

I really can’t help myself, now can I? Let’s face it—if you’re reading this, it’s too late.

If You’re Reading This, It’s Too Late (Secret Series) Review

This is the second book in the Secret Series by Pseudonymous Bosch. This book continues with Cassandra and Max-Ernest as the main characters. In this book Cassandra and Max-Ernest discovered the Midnight Sun. The Midnight Sun is a spa for the forces of evil. Cassandra and Max-Ernest meet Dr. L and Mrs. Mauvais and then the couple invites both Cass and Max-Ernest to dinner. When the kids leave the Mauvais house, Dr. L and his wife start getting suspicious about why Cass and Max-Ernest came to the Midnight Sun. Later on in the story Cassandra goes back to the Midnight Sun to try and figure out what Dr. L and his wife are secretly doing. Max-Ernest and Cassandra find a map to the secret but they never actually find the secret in this book. Dr. L and Mrs. Mauvais try to get the map from Cassandra and Max-Ernest, but they don’t succeed. You are left wondering what is going to happen in the next book.

I really like the writing style of Pseudonymous Bosch. It is very unusual and creative. For example, in this book the chapters go backwards instead of forwards. He does a lot of other fun things with his writing. I would recommend this book to readers that have a good sense of humor and enjoy mysteries and secrets.

Magic Tree House Boxed Set, Books 5-8: Night of the Ninjas, Afternoon on the Amazon, Sunset of the Sabertooth, and Midnight on the Moon Review

This book series is very simply written and with some grammatical errors “till” instead on until, beginning sentences with “And”. However, it has been fun to read 5 of these books with my 6-7 year old son over the past month. It takes about an hour to read the whole story. He looks forward to the next story, as the story in the books are interweaved and sequentially dependent. He even wanted to peek at the end of the book to see what happened before we started reading! It is that kind of enthusiasm that encourages more reading. A few of the stories were borderline scary because the kids are held captive by a pirate, and in danger of being hurt by a sabertooth tiger etc, but these can be put into perspective if the child is ready to deal with it.

Big Blue Book of Beginner Books (Beginner Books(R)) Overview

For over 54 years; Dr. Seuss has paid untold millions of house calls to welcoming children and their grateful parents. Now your favorite stories are available in this specially priced collector’s edition. This collection of Beginner Books contains: Are You My Mother? by P. D. Eastman; The Best Nest by P. D. Eastman; A Fly Went By by Mike McClintock; illus. by Fritz Siebel; Go; Dog; Go! by P. D. Eastman; It’s Not Easy Being a Bunny by Marilyn Sadler; illus. by Roger Bollen and Put Me in the Zoo by Robert Lopshire.

Big Blue Book of Beginner Books (Beginner Books(R)) Review

My daughter is 5 years old and in kindergarten. She loves this book. The words are simple and easy to read and the repetition and rhyme help keep her attention. Having the stories in a collection makes her feel like she’s reading a big kid’s book, like her 8 year old brother. Together as a family, we have enjoyed reading this book numerous times.

The stories include the following:
* “It’s Not Easy Being a Bunny
* “Go, Dog, Go!”
* “Are You My Mother?”
* “The Best Nest”
* “Put Me in the Zoo”
* “A Fly Went By”

I’d recommend this as a beginning reader book for kindergarten and first grade. Older kids may think they are beyond Dr. Seuss, but my son still enjoyed them last year in second grade and even now, when we read together.

Younger children will appreciate the rhythm and rhymes, the colorful pictures and the silliness.

I do not mind reading and re-reading the stories over and over and over. There is a hypnotic appeal to them that works on adults, too.

Sleepy Dog (Step into Reading, Step 1) Review

I bought this book for my three year old daughter. She loves us to read books to her and I wanted to get a book that I thought it would keep her attention. We have read it so much that she can complete the sentence on the page. The author did a great job making illustrations that goes along with the story so that a younger child can figure out what is going on.

Waddle!: A Scanimation Picture Book (Scanimation Picture Books) Overview

It’s Waddle! And it’s in color. And boy, is it irresistible. In the same way that kids can’t read Gallop! without wanting to gallop around the room, Waddle!, an animals-in-motion Scanimation book, will inspire prancing, hopping, stomping, and scampering. And did we mention color? Created by the optical genius behind the phenomenal #1 and #2 New York Times bestselling children’s books, Gallop! and Swing!, Waddle! adds touches of color to the images and integrates it into the text. That prancing pig is pink, the leaping dolphin is blue, the slithering snake yellow. The Scanimation itself is also more lifelike, as the author continues to refine his patented Scanimation process, resulting in a more fluid, realistic motion. Nothing else compares.

Waddle! teaches color and movement. Its language is a joy, the rhymes inspiring, the animals full of life. And one more thing: Waddle! has a surprise ending. Something else to grab the reader—literally.

Waddle!: A Scanimation Picture Book (Scanimation Picture Books) Review

Waddle, illustrated by Rufus Butler Seder, is just about the cutest book I’ve seen in a long time. I brought it home for Rory, 18 months old, and she immediately feel in love. She couldn’t wait to turn each page and act out the movements of all the animals.

“Can you STOMP like an elephant?”

Yes she can!

This is a new favorite and stays close by for when Rory is visiting.

I’m off to get the complete set for our church’s toddler room.Waddle!: A Scanimation Picture Book (Scanimation Picture Books)

Artemis Fowl (Artemis Fowl, Book 1) Overview

Artemis Fowl, a charming but villainous twelve-year-old, takes on the dangerous world of the Fairy People in this unforgettable story, which became a national best-seller and instant cult classic with its hardcover publication in May 2000. The book received tremendous attention and created fans of all ages, around the world. In this extraordinary adventure, Artemis kidnaps a fairy, Captain Holly Short of the LEPrecon unit, to help him decode the fairys magic book, which will lead him to a vast treasure of gold. But these are not the fairies of bedtime storiestheyre cunning and dangerous! Full of unexpected twists and turns, Artemis Fowl opens up a riveting world of fantasy and mystery where anything, literally, is possible.

Artemis Fowl (Artemis Fowl, Book 1) Review

This week’s book is Artemis Fowl, which I loved. Artemis Fowl is a twelve year old genius criminal mastermind (awesome) who kidnaps a fairy and holds her hostage to extort fairy gold (more awesome) from the hidden kingdom of magical creatures. Eoin Colfer approaches this material in a way that is fresh, exciting, and not the least bit patronizing so that adults will be able to enjoy this book as much as their children.

Artemis is a welcome change from the standard unlucky but scrappy hero (whose parents are probably dead) who means well and is genuinely courageous that populates most MG series. Artemis Fowl doesn’t mean well for anyone but himself and his mother. He is relentlessly cold in his assessment of people and situations and he even poisons a fairy (don’t worry, this is MG and the fairy comes out okay, but still…). Artemis doesn’t kill anyone, but murder is never an impossibility for him (in fact, he threatens nearly everyone he meets) and that keeps the character fresh and interesting.

Also fun are Colfer’s amusing pairings of traditional magic with modern technology so that the fairies are part standard magical creature, part Men In Black. Various characters have guns, ninja skills, bombs, and the ability to eat through nearly anything. The whole affair reads like a big budget summer movie and that’s a compliment. I love summer movies and I loved Artemis Fowl.

Of special note to writers: witness how Colfer easily navigates through multiple third person fixed perspectives. His narrative is never restricted to just one character, which is a break from the norm in MG fiction and admirable. Although Artemis Fowl is unquestionably the main character, he isn’t always the current protagonist in the text. Colfer more often writes from the perspective of various fairies and even a dwarf, each with their own goal and story to tell. And the novel is all the richer for it.

Happy Birthday to You! Review

Dr. Suess is one of my favorite authors. This book is one of my favorites for the same reason: it’s lots of fun to read, it gives me and the kids lots of fantastical things to talk about and we bond together. It is delightful. The graphics are silly, greatly detailed, and show the story nicely. The story is lots of fun, for kids and adults. Dr. Suess is notorious for tongue twisters, so, parents, beware, don’t read too fast! It’s inexpensive and highly recommended for kids who anticipate birthdays. I give it an A-.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (Book 4) Overview

Harry Potter is midway through his training as a wizard and his coming of age. Harry wants to get away from the pernicious Dursleys and go to the International Quidditch Cup. He wants to find out about the mysterious event that’s supposed to take place at Hogwarts this year, an event involving two other rival schools of magic, and a competition that hasn’t happened for a hundred years. He wants to be a normal, fourteen-year-old wizard. But unfortunately for Harry Potter, he’s not normal – even by wizarding standards. And in his case, different can be deadly.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (Book 4) Review

Harry Potter #4: Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, by J. K. Rowling

As Harry gets older, each book in the series gets a little darker, a little more mature. The first three books were pretty light, and even though Voldemort showed up, you were sure Harry was going to be okay. But in “The Goblet of Fire,” for the first time, I had doubts for Harry’s life.

“The Goblet of Fire” is a big, chunky book, but don’t let the size stop you; it’s a pretty quick read. There’s a lot, lot, lot going on in this book, with a major event happening before Harry even gets to Hogwarts! You’re likely to be sucked into the book; I usually carry it everywhere with me until I finish it. I’ve read this book several times now, and it’s one of my favorite in the series. I love the author’s mix of suspense, action, and fantasy; Rowling’s magical world is some of the best fiction I’ve read in my life.

When Harry returns for his fourth year at Hogwarts, he’s disappointed to hear that Quidditch will be cancelled for the year…because Hogwarts is hosting the Triwizard tournament. The competition will be between Hogwarts and two other rival schools of magic, Beauxbatons and Durmstrang, and is only open to students seventeen and older. Naturally, Harry gets picked as a champion – without putting his name up. There’s someone at Hogwarts that seems determined to use the tournament to put an end to Harry’s life.

The tone of “The Goblet of Fire” is much darker than the previous Harry books, but there are quite a few hilarious incidents. Dobby from “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets” returns, and Draco Malfoy gets turned into a ferret. There’s a crazy new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher, Mad-Eye Moody. And in addition to the Triwizard tournament, Harry has to deal with teenage hormones, angst, and nastier than ever classmates. Rowling perfectly captures how many teens feel when growing up, and shows that even though Harry has magic powers, he’s still an ordinary teenager in many aspects.

One other thing I noticed is that British slang shows up a lot more in “The Goblet of Fire,” and I personally enjoyed it. It was fun to learn different terms and words, but younger readers may need some help with these sometimes.

“The Goblet of Fire” is the first Harry book to end on a cliffhanger, and you’ll likely be rushing for the next in the series, to find out what happens next. If you’re reading Harry for the first time now, you’re lucky that you won’t have to wait a year!

5/5.
